National Signing Day 2012

1 Feb

National Signing Day is growing in popularity and publicity.

ESPNU aired 10 live hours dedicated to recruit coverage. Also a live updated horizontal and vertical ticker, even during commericials.

You can see ESPNU’s complete list of their 150 top recruits HERE.

ESPN ranked the colleges with the best recruiting class:

1. Alabama (blah blah blah)

2. Florida State

3. Texas

4. Florida

5. Georgia

LSU had another great recruiting year, coming in at #12.

I’m most excited about 6’3, 270 pound Defensive lineman Quarterback, Jeremy Liggins. Dude is huge, fast, and talented.

I loved how No. 3 OLB in ESPNU 150 Kwon Alexander announced LSU as his choice. He revealed purple suspenders and bowtie. #Classic

Wide Reciever (and brother of LSU great Patrick Peterson) Avery Johnson teased LSU coaches. He called to say he was goin to Bama (just kidding)just as his NLI fax arrived at LSU.

These guys are gonna fit right in with the LSU program!

Some of last year’s prospects came in and made an immediate impact, others red shirted and will be dominating on the field this year.

I say with great pride and excitement, here is LSU’s 2012 Recruiting class:

What Is National Signing Day?

31 Jan

It’s that time of year…

The 1st Wednesday of February.

No, not Groundhog Day, it’s National Signing Day.

College athletes are able to sign a National Letter of Intent to play a sport at a college.

Many of the nation’s best high school athletes have made VERBAL commits, but this is the day to seal the deal in ink.

It seems like there is increased interest in NSD every year.

This year with recruiting drama around top ranked football  players like QB Gunner Kiel and Safety Landon Collins, the internet has been abuzz for months.

On February 1, 2012 ESPN will dedicate TEN HOURS of  live coverage for National Signing Day.

Folks, this is major.

I love NSD, as a huge LSU and SEC fan, I share so much pride when I see the future of the football programs and tradition of the SEC.

As a mom of a sports loving son, we watch together and he learns about how hard work, dedication, and talent can pay off by means of a college scholarship.

Soooo….what exactly happens on National Signing Day?

Associate Commissioner Greg Sankey, who oversees compliance for the SEC explains:

When student-athletes signing with a certain school on Signing Day, what documents are they actually putting their name on?

Sankey: In the SEC they are actually signing a couple of documents. One is the actual National Letter of Intent (NLI) and the second is an SEC financial aid agreement. The first document, the NLI, sets out the dynamics of their signing, the end of their recruitment and their commitment to a particular institution and a sport. The financial aid agreement will set forth the athletic scholarship they will receive upon enrollment at the institution. Sometimes there is an institutional document as well explaining policies and procedures.

Can you explain just what the NLI is and what it means once the student-athlete signs it?

Sankey: It’s an agreement between a prospective student-athlete and his or her family and the university or college where they are signing. Essentially, the prospective student-athlete is saying that they are going to attend this university (where they sign) and I’m going to participate in the sport listed for a particular period of time. A year has been the norm. That’s the minimal requirement for the National Letter of Intent. The university is saying if you attend this institution and participate in the sport as you have indicated, they we are providing you this amount of athletics aid. Generally in football it is a full athletic scholarship, because it is what is called a “head-count” sport. Then, among the other institutions out there, part of the agreement with the NLI is that is the moment where recruiting ceases.

The importance of Signing Day is that it is the first opportunity to sign, and then when someone signs the other Division I and Division II institutions that participate in the NLI program agree that the recruitment of that prospect will cease.

It’s a very emotional day for many of the athletes who have spent YEARS working towards the day of earning a college scholarship.

Happy signing to all the athletes, their families, coaches, and colleges (especially those heading to LSU).

Stop Bullying Kyle Williams

23 Jan

According to the U.S. Department of Eduation, 160,000 children a day stay home from school because they are afraid of being bullied.

There have been more and more cases of bullying in schools.

Today, kids are dealing with bullying on another level. There is cyber bullying (twitter, Facebook, email), sports bullying, gay bullying…the list goes on and on.

Bullying has always been prevelant in schools, but it just seems like it’s escalating.

There is no excuse for bullying with kids.

There definitely is no excuse for bullying among adults.

I never realized that bullying in sports existed until recently.

I am an avid college football fan and understand how it sucks when your team loses. However, I usually watch with my sons so I try to be cautious how I express my frustration.

In the NFC Championship Game between the NY Giants and the San Francisco 49ers, Kyle Williams of the 49ers fumbled 2 punt returns.

The Giants ultimately won the game in overtime.

Both fumbles resulted in the Giants scoring afterward. Many irate 49er fans blamed Williams for the loss. (Educated sports fans know one or 2 plays does not determine winning a game…hello…a football game lasts like 3 hours!)

These idiots fans took to Twitter and Facebook to express their ignorance frustration.

Kyle Williams has been trending nonstop on Twitter since the end of the game, and it’s not for his cool tattoos.

Some went above and beyond criticism and issued death threats and flat out hate towards Kyle Williams.

@KyleWilliams_10. I hope you, youre wife, kids and family die, you deserve it(@javpasquel)

@KyleWilliams_10 you should jump off the golden gate bridge for that one. #fired(@KillaKlips)

@KyleWilliams_10 HOPE U RUN n2 A BULLET DA WAY U RAN INTO DAT BALL FUCKN DUMMY OR HOPE U DROP YA 1ST BORN LIKE U DROP DAT BALL U FUCKN IDIOT (@Markymeagain)

you fucking suck and I hope you get cut! @KyleWilliams_10 (@tomidontplaydat)

Im on you all day @KyleWilliams_10 fuckin choked… Damn loser(@Mr_Coo_Coo502)

I hope you die in your sleep tonight @KyleWilliams_10 (@ComptonAssDeezy)

WHOA! Throw the ole “Sticks and Stones” adage out the window.

Death threats and hate hurt!

Cyber bullying gives cowards an easy outlet to say things hiding behind their keyboard.

What kind of message is this sending our kids? As adults, we need to be the example.

It was nice to see some of his teammates step up and express their support.

As a pro athlete, you expect criticism. However, the threats against Kyle Williams cross the line.

He’s not super human. He’s a man with feelings. I’m sure he’s beating himself up for his own performance.

The concept with Kyle is no different from a 7 year old being laughed at for his freckles, the middle schooler whose lunch money is taken, or the child who is ridiculed for being picked last.

All this needs to stop!

Parents, we have got to take a stand on bullying, and it starts with the example we set.

Bullying has gone beyond Yo Mama jokes and fist fights. Kids are being taunted, rejected, excluded and hurt to the point of committing suicide.

Please take it seriously.

Talk to your kids,  look for warning signs, and take action.

Support Your Child’s College Choice

17 Jan

If you’re a fan of college football, you prolly know National Signing Day is right around the corner.

The days leading up til the first Wednesday in February are very exciting.

Until you actually sign a National Letter of Intent to play a sport at a college, you have merely made a verbal commitment.

This year has been interesting for college football.

Two of the nation’s top high school players have made decisions putting their MOMS in the news.

We’ve seen the excitement of high school star safety, Landon Collins verbally committing to a school against his mother’s approval.

Now, college football is talking about Gunner Kiel and his mom.

The nation’s top QB originally committed to his home state school, Indiana. After a visit to LSU, he changed his mind and verbally committed to the mighty LSU Tigers. However, it is being reported that Gunner will not be playing ball at LSU. He will be attending Notre Dame.

According to recruiting expert Michael Scarborough,

“He wants to come to LSU, but his mother (Aleta Kiel) got very emotional Monday and did not want her son to leave. He plans to enroll in classes at Notre Dame on Tuesday.

Scarborough goes on to say, ”What has been relayed to me is that he wants to come to LSU, but his parents want him at Notre Dame because it is closer to home.”

Ok moms, I get it…we love our boys.

I love LSU and SEC football, but I’ve always said I wouldn’t want my sons to play football in college because I couldn’t watch them get hurt. Yes, selfish and worrisome, I know.

I’m a mom. That’s what we do.

I am a mom first and a sports fan second.

However, if they choose to play football or any sport, I’ve made a verbal commitment to step back and allow them to make their own choices despite my personal feelings.

No guilt trips, bad attitude,  passive aggressive comments, silent treatment…just love and support for their decision.

Afterall, isn’t this what we spend 18 years trying to teach our children?

We raise them and instill values and beliefs in them hoping to make them fine young men. Then we send them out into the world, let them grow on their own, and learn from their choices?

As moms, we should support our children and their decisions. It’s a part of life. THEIR life.

They are choosing a COLLEGE, not a CRIME.

It’s not about us. We have lived our life.

As our boys grow, our role in their life will change.

Going off to college is part of the process of these high school boys growing into men.

Let your children GROW.

Let your children GEAUX.

So what if you don’t like it…it’s your child’s choice, life, and dream.

As a LSU fan, I was disappointed to hear Gunner would not be a Tiger (P.S the name Gunner Kiel ROCKS!).

But I understand. He’s a 18 year old kid. Kids change their mind.

This is one of the biggest decisions he will make in his life. He has to do what’s best for himself.

(Plus LSU has one of my faaaave quarterbacks, Zack Mettenberger. Can’t wait to see him play! We also have 3 other QBs: Stephen Rivers, Jared Foster, and Jerrard Randle. Don’t worry Tiger fans, LSU will be fine in the QB department).

Best wishes to all the high school players on National Signing Day (especially our new Tigers!!!)

Red Tails

11 Jan

Living in LA, I constantly hear buzz about entertainment events going on.

Most of it I ignore, bc it usually is just that…BUZZ.

However, I have a special interest in one upcoming event.

On January 20, the movie Red Tails will be released.

Red Tails is the heroic story of the Tuskegee Airmen, a crew of African American pilots during World War II.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the 1st all black aerial combat unit.

During  a time of intense segregation, these brave young airmen take to the skies to fight for their country.

Father of 3 George Lucas is the Executive Producer.

Father of 2 John Ridley is the writer.

Aside from the amazing story, many people are talking about Red Tails because George Lucas invested $58 million of his own money into this project. His estimated net worth is 3.2 billion.

Red Tails has taken 23 years to make.

On top of the large script content, Georgie said he had a hard time getting Hollywood studios to fund the movie because of the all black cast.

Now that the January 20 release date is around the corner, everyone is getting super excited.

The film focuses on Tuskegee Airmen heroes of World War II and has become one of the only movies to be screened privately for two US presidents prior to its release.

Red Tails star, Terrence Howard was  present at a showing for George H Bush in Houston, Texas.

There will also be a private screening at the White House with President Barack Obama.

Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry are showing their support of the film after hosting a private screening of the film in Dallas.

Oprah said, ”It’s a film about human beings with enormous courage who believed in our country, who wanted to fight for our country, who are really our heroes.”

For me, the biggest endorsement came from Alabama football head coach, Nick Saban.

Coach Saban took his football team to view the movie the night before the BCS Championship game against my beloved #1 ranked LSU Tigers.

After a 21-0 victory over my Tigers (sniff sniff) the media were anxiously awaiting to hear Coach Saban’s winning secret. He surprisingly revealed his team was inspired by Red Tails:

We went to see the move Red Tails last night, which I would reccomend to anybody. But, you know, those guys’ motto was “to the last plane, the bullet, the last man, the minute we fight and we always stay with the mission.” And I think that kind of described the spirit of that group extremely well, but it also describes the spirit of you know the group of players that we have on our team this year.

I can’t wait to take my sons to see this film to learn about their history and possibly inspire them to reach for greatness!

Red Tails opens in theaters January 20.

Red Tails stars Oscar® winner Cuba Gooding Jr. (Jerry Maguire), Oscar nominee Terrence Howard (Crash), Emmy® winner Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”), Nate Parker (The Secret Life of Bees, The Great Debaters), David Oyelowo (The Last King of Scotland, Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Tristan Wilds (“90210”), Grammy® Award winner Cliff Smith aka Method Man (“The Wire”), Kevin Phillips (Pride), Rick Otto (“The Wire”), Lee Tergesen (Monster), Andre Royo (“Heroes”), Grammy-Award winner Ne-Yo (Stomp the Yard), Elijah Kelley (Hairspray), Marcus T. Paulk (Take the Lead), Leslie Odom Jr. (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Michael B. Jordan (“Friday Night Lights,” Chronicle) and Daniela Ruah (“NCIS”).

#1 LSU vs #2 Alabama In The BCS Bowl

6 Jan

The highly anticiapated last game of the college football season is upon us.

This game is so big, nosebleed seats are starting at $1,000.

“Good” seats are going for $5500.

#1 LSU will play #2 Alabama in New Orleans for the BCS Championship Game on 1.9.12.

I am sooooo excited!

LSU has an undefeated season, clinched the SEC Division title, and already beaten Alabama (on their home turf) once this season.

There is so much rivalry and history between the LSU Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide/Elephants/Tampons.

Both schools are physically strong and huge defensive threats.

They play in the same division, SEC Western Conference.

Also,Bama’s coach, Nick Saban  stole LSU secrets coached at LSU from 200-2004, leading the Tigers to a BCS Title beating the Oklahoma Sooners 21-14.

LSU and Alabama are undeniably the top 2 college football teams in the Nation.

However, LSU is better.

*LSU has beaten EIGHT nationally ranked teams. Since the AP ranking were created in 1937, no national champion team has ever done this.

*LSU has 3 victories over top 5 ranked teams.

*LSU won the SEC Championship (the strongest conference in college football) by 32 points beating UGA in Atlanta.

*The Tigers have beaten 12 opponents by an average of 30 points.

*LSU has seven double-digit victories over nationally ranked teams.

*LSU has scored 40 or more points against six ranked schools.

*LSU has beaten 5 teams who have won Bowl games (would have been 6 if UGA hadn’t choked).

*Oregon beat Wisconsin 45-38 in the Rose Bowl. LSU beat Oregon 40-27. On a neutral site. With our backup QB

*West Virgina beat Clemson 70-33 in the Orange Bowl. LSU beat West Virgina 47-21. On the road.

*LSU coach, Les Miles named 2011 AP Coach of the Year

*LSU’s Tyrann Mathieu won Chuck Bednarik Defensive Player of the Year

*LSU’s Morris Clairborne won Jim Thorpe Outstanding Defensive Back of the Year

*LSU’s John Chavis won Frank Broyes Assistant Coach of the the Year

Need I geaux on?

Despite LSU being ranked #1 in the BCS poll ALL EIGHT WEEKS, there are still naysayers. SMH

Oh well, I believe.

Mo and B believe.

We host a LSU victory/viewing party for all the big games. The BCS game is no exception. LSU alum come over, bring yummy Cajun food, and we laugh at the other team cheer on our LSU TIGERS!

So proud of  LSU for their amazing 13-0  football season.

It’s time to win our 3rd BCS Championship and bring the crystal home!

Landon Collins’ Mom Wants Him At LSU Not Bama

6 Jan

The Under Armour All-America game was on last night.

It showcased the top high school football players in the U.S.

There were 13 players in the game related to former pro athletes including Jim Kelly, Deion Sanders, and Ken Griffey Jr.

Many of the young men have already made verbal commitments to top colleges, but some haven’t and a few of them revealed their decision on national television during the game.

The most talked about is  6-foot-2, 205-pound Landon Collins. He is the nation’s top safety prospect.

His decision came down to 2 schools: LSU and Alabama, the #1 and #2 rated colleges in the country.

Collins is from Geismar, Louisiana not far from Baton Rouge.

Ultimately, Landon Collins chose Alabama over LSU.

He said he felt more at home with the Crimson Tide. (Booooo!)

That’s been the thing for me and what I have always said. I felt so much at home at Alabama,” he said. “I have so much trust in those coaches and I get along so well with the players. That is why I ultimately picked Alabama.”

Most parents would be happy that their child will be attending college on a scholarship and playing for a top notch football program.

Not Landon Collins’ mom!

Immediately after saying his terrible choice, Mama Collins dropped her head not hiding her disappointment.

“I feel as if LSU is the better place for him,” she said. “LSU Tigers are No. 1.”

While Landon held up gloves celebrating Alabama, his mom sat next to him waving the gloves of mighty LSU!

GEAUX Mama Collins.

Sorry, but as a LSU fan, I love his mom’s zeal, respect, and appreciation for LSU!!!

Afterall, mama knows best!

However, if his decision were between Bama and say….Ole Miss, I would be denouncing her actions for not supporting her son.

So…I vow never to do this to Mo or B if they choose another college over LSU. I promise…

Oh, and Tide fans, don’t get your cousin’s panties in a happy wad thinking you’ve snooped the Tigers. Word is, Landon Collins’ girlfriend is a big Alabama fan and will be attending there next year.

Hmm….sounds like the NCAA needs to look into some Bama recruiting policies…IJS

GEAUX TIGERS!!!!

LSU Championship Bounce

1 Jan

I really was gonna wait a day or 2 to talk smack about LSU, but I came across this video, and couldn’t help myself!!!

In 1985, the Chicago Bears made “The Super Bowl Shuffle” video just before their Super Bowl XX win.

In 2012, the LSU Tigers have “The Championship Bounce” video just before we beat Alabama for our 3rd BCS Title.

While our BCS opponent, Alabamer is doing the LOSER LINE DANCE, the undefeated LSU Tigers are doing the Championship Bounce!

This video is so fun and represents the true spirt of LSU Tigers…clever, funny, and talented.

Mo and B are getting a real kick out of watching it and doing the “Les Miles Clap” and the “Brad Wing”.

GEAUX TIGERS! Bring home the crystal (AGAIN)!!!!

Supporting Kids In Sports

16 Dec

In Lakeville, Minnesota, 52-year-old Steven Wilson was arrested and charged with fifth-degree domestic assault after he reportedly grabbed his son and punched him in the face after a loss.

Many witnesses told police the father grabbed his son with one arm and began punching him in the face with the other.

Nearby parents had to physically intervene before the altercation was broken up.

After calling local police to the scene, Wilson was arrested and spent the night in jail before posting $10,000 to get out without conditions.

If charged, he faces a $3,000 fine and up to 90 days in jail.

Even without knowing all the details, this is a very sad and unfortunate situation.

However, I need to read stories like this to remind myself not to take sports too seriously.

I will be the 1st to admit that I am the crazy mom yelling, screaming, and cheering on the field sideline. I get so emotionally involved in all Mo’s games, you would think I have stock in his team.

I have always been very competitive on all levels. Mo is the same way.

Many times I have to take a deep breath, relax, and remind myself that it’s just a soccer game/basketball game/after school game.

I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to run on the playing field and help Mo’s team….or smack an opposing team for roughing up my son.

I’ve never felt rage against Mo for his performance, but the incident at Lakeville South High School is a gentle reminder to love and support my son throughout his athletic experiences.

As parents, fans, and onlookers, it’s so easy to watch from the sidelines and critique.

Spectators always seem to have the best insight and hindsight.

The beauty of sports is that it’s such a great opportunity for character building. Yes, winning is great, but it also teaches our children a great life lesson in how to deal with defeat/loss/mistakes/disappointment.

I’m sure when he faces adversity in sports he will be hard enough on himself.

So, I will do my best to continue to support and encourage him throughout the process.
