I Love Magnolia Bakery

13 Dec

On a recent trip to New York, I discovered Magnolia Bakery.

Finding Magnolia Bakery in LA was better news than Michael Kors opening at my local mall.

Since Magnolia does featured flavors every month, I try and get by to tantalize my taste buds.

For the holiday season, they are featuring mini-cupcake Christmas Ornament boxes and mini-cupcake Dreidel boxes, Chocolate Crinkle and Pecan Sno Ball holiday cookies, & Gingerbread and Rockette Red Velvet cupcakes.

YUM-O-RIFIC!!!

Like many households, I love to keep baked goods and yummy treats plentiful during the holidays.

Ya never know when Santa’s gonna drop by to see who’s being naughty and nice :)

Here’s some of the Magnolia Bakery holiday treats:

The Chocolate Crinkle cookie had the soft moist consistency of cake then it’s rolled in powdered sugar. Sooo good!

Their Pecan Sno Ball cookies (A.K.A Wedding Cookies in the South) were my FAVE! Perfect combo of buttery and pecan goodness

Festive Hanukkah and Christmas cupcakes w/cream cheese and vanilla buttercream icing

These chocolate cookies were so moist and filled w/chocolate, pecans and cranberries

Sweet coconut macaroons dipped in chocolate

Bronson gave the vanilla bean cupcakes his seal of approval

Mo loved the Chocolate Crinkle cookie swimming in powdered sugar

The staff and environment at Magnolia Bakery has such a warm feeling. It’s how you wanna feel when you’re indulging in comfort food.

In addition to the fact that they make everyting fresh-from-scratch on premises all day, every day, using the finest ingredients, I love how friendly and helpful the entire staff is. It is evident that they truly enjoy their job and bake ever morsel of yummy goodness with ♥LOVE♥.

If you’re in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, or Dubai head over to Magnolia Bakery for some holiday treats.

2011 SEC Championship Game

5 Dec

There are many ways for Moms to bond with our sons.

Some like mommy and me classes, date night, and movie night.

Those are all great, but one of my fave bonding experiences with Mo was taking him to the 2011 SEC Championship Game (because all moms do that w/our sons, right? lol).

Since I love college football, atteneded LSU and UGA, and am an Atlanta native, it seemed like a no brainer.

LSU is my fave football team in the whole world.

Mo’s mom great football sense has steered him to cheer for the mighty LSU Tigers (betta had).

We’ve had a couple of LSU football parties and he loves watching the games.

When I told him he would get to see LSU play in person, he lost it.

He was super excited for the whole week.

The experience didn’t disappoint.

LSU put on a great show beating UGA 41-10 in the Georgia Dome to secure the SEC Championship title.

I was impressed at how the LSU fans were so vocal and really came out to support our Tigers. It felt like Mardi Gras in the Dome.

There was a lot of respect and friendly camaraderie between UGA and LSU fans. That’s part of what makes the SEC so great.

Being in the Dome together is an experience Mo and I will never forget.

Couldn’t think of a better mother-son bonding experience than LSU football and winning a championship.

Woo hooo!!! GEAUX TIGERS!

Can’t go to a game without TAILGATING!!! (yes, we crashed a UGA party)

Awesome seats just 8 rows from the field.

Mo was fond of the Golden Girls.

LSU Cheerleaders

LSU was ready to rumble!

UGA came to play…

LSU fans were deep!

Time to ball.

Mo’s fave player, #7 Tyrann Mathieu

Heisman candidate AKA “Honey Badger” cruising on his game changing punt return.

There’s always that ONE fan who messes up the perfect pic(blocking Tyrann’s head). SMH #7 in the end zone.

Sowwwwy Georgia…

Congratulations to the 2011 SEC Champion LSU TIGERS!

Trick Or Treat With Ease

30 Oct

With Halloween around the corner, many of our kids will embark on the lovely tradition of knocking on strangers’ doors and getting free candy. A.K.A Trick or treating.

Our neighborhood doesn’t have a lot of sidewalks, so we’ll be going to a friends house for the festivities. I know this is common practice for many kids in our area.

Before you head out, you might want to do a little research on exactly whose door you will be knocking on and accepting goodies from.

The only thing scarier than ghosts, goblins, and witches are child predators!

The following sites are great for listing the name and location of registered sex offenders in any area as well as providing information to help protect your children and family:

Family Watchdog

California Megan’s Law

Remind your kids not to give out personal info such as where they live, etc. while trick or treating, especially if you don’t know who you’re talking to.

Enjoy Halloween and be safe (and send me all your Butterfingers and Skittles).

Should Boys Pee Alone In Public?

19 Oct

As a mom of 2 boys, it’s always an awkward moment if Mo has to use the bathroom while we’re out running errands.

Obviously, if Bronson has to go, I take him in the ladies bathroom.

Mo is 7, and likes to be independent.

Normally, if it’s a single stall bathroom that locks, I let him go in by himself while I stand guard outside the door.

If it’s a multiple stall in an unfamiliar public place, then I take him in the ladies bathroom with me.

He doesn’t mind. He is very leery of strange places and people so he seems to welcome my presence.

This is often a big debate for moms of boys though. You want them to be independent, but you also wanna ensure their safety.

This article might make you think twice though…

An incident involving the alleged sexual assault of an 11 year-old child at a shopping mall in Santa Clarita has resulted in an investigation by the Special Victims Bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

On Monday, at about 4:00PM, October 17, 2011, the boy was inside a public restroom located in the food court area of the Westfield Valencia Town Center Mall (24201 West Valencia Blvd., Valencia, CA 91355) when he was allegedly sexually assaulted by a stranger.

After the boy and suspect left the restroom, the father confronted the suspect in the courtyard of the food court, and a physical altercation ensued. The suspect ran away in the direction of the Transit Center across the street. He most likely used public transit to leave the scene.

Sheriff’s detectives have identified the suspect as a 25 year-old White male. He is 5’07,” 255 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

He should have visible injuries to his face, as a result of his fight with the victim’s father.

These stories are always a huge reminder that there are so many sick individuals in the world.

These idiots who prey on children are disgusting.

Use extra caution when it comes to the public restrooms.

There is nothing wrong with being too careful.

I Hate Commercialized Kid Places

10 Oct

I am not a fan of Chuck E. Cheese, Disneyland, amusement parks, indoor playgrounds, pumpkin patches, petting zoos

Basically, the list goes on and on (going to cool sporting events is exempt from this list!).

If it is a commercialized place for kids, the chance of me enjoying it is prolly lower on my list than paying bills.

It doesn’t mean my kids are deprived of these experiences. They go (maybe once), but I grumble and complain. Of course, not to them. That’s what facebook, twitter, and my blog is for. :)

I have never taken Mo to Disneyland, but this summer he got to experience it with camp. He enjoyed it in the moment and can cross it off his bucket list, but when he got home, he said aside from the money he spent on a souvineer car for B, all the money he spent there was a waste and he’d rather save it.

That’s my boy!!!

I just hate wasting money and being around other people’s germ-y, bad kids.

I prefer to entertain my kids in a more conventional and controlled environment.

I send them to school to learn to socailize and I have no problem with them getting dirty and having fun there. In the summer, they go to camp and get to enjoy field trips, socializing, and plenty of play.

When we have down time, I like to do simple things at home like go for walks, water play in the backyard, creative building w/blocks and legos, and plenty of funny conversations and story telling.

I encourage them to explore what they like…sports, cars, art, cooking, technology.

I’m just not a big fan of doling out the big bucks for fun.

A big outing is great every once in a while, but not a weekly neccesity.

Fun doesn’t always have to mean spending money.

Fun can = free.

I get it, a lot of people don’t have the time or patience to do it themselves. And some kids don’t have the attention span. Many people just like to get out the house and try something new.

That’s fine. You have to know what works for you and your family.

Being at home and coming up with fun easy ideas works for me and the boys.

You can call me old fashion.

You can call me cheap.

IDC

All I know is my boys and I can have just as much fun having a homemade picnic at a local park as we can spending half a paycheck in an amusement park.

B’s Big Boy Haircut At Floyd’s

22 Sep

When it comes time for the boys to get a haircut I like taking them to “big boy” barbers.

I know there are a ton of kiddie places out there that cut  hair while your child sits in a rocket or race car chair. Some even blast Disney movies on big screens, and offer wii games while the kid gets trimmed and clipped. Oh, and don’t forget the unlimited supply of lollipops and Red Vines to keep the kiddies happy.

But come on…that’s just flat out annoying to me.

What is it, a haircut or a trip to Grandma’s?

There is so much sensory overload in those places, it’s like walking into a Chuck E. Cheese on steroids.

I’ve been to those places enough times to know that they are more concerned with your child not crying than they are the actual haircut.

For baby’s 1st haircut, it’s a great experience and definitely helps to calm the kid. But after a couple trips, it’s time to move on.

As my kids mature, I want them to leave the barbershop with a great looking mane, not a re-enactment of Jim Carey in Dumb and Dumber.

Lately, I’ve been taking the boys to Floyd’s.

It’s a great local barbershop that caters to the young and older.

I love the cool laid back atmosphere with free internet access, temporary tattoos, and cool music (no Wiggles soundtrack blasting here…they are all about Rock n Roll).

The stylists are fast, friendly enough, and skilled. Oh, and most are tatted up!!!

The lady who cut B’s hair talked to him just enough to make him feel comfortable, but not so much where he felt like he was at preschool. Afterall, I want the stylist focusing on what she’s doing, not about who his fave Sesame Street character is.

I think a more grown up environment helps my boys to rise to the occasion and act more well mannered and grown up.

Oh, and the BEST part…the haircut was $16!!!! Great price for a great experience!

His hair was getting too long and fluffy. Time for a trim.

Relaxing in the chair

Always happy to see the greatest female singer of our time: MARIAH!

Magnolia Bakery In LA!

15 Sep

On my 1st trip to New York, I FELL IN LOVE.

No, not with NYC…but with MAGNOLIA BAKERY!

Soooo many of my New Yorker friends kept telling me to try it.

With so many tourist sights to see, I didn’t think I’d have time. It’s just another bakery, right?

Wrong! My sweet tooth got the best of me, and it was an instant love connection.

I was super excited to learn that my love affair could continue when I returned to LA.

The LA Magnolia Bakery is in a great location with cute shops and restaurants an easy stroll down the street.

Magnolia Bakery has my 4 requirements for a great food place:

1. The food is GOOOOD. They use top notch ingredients and make everything fresh from scratch in small batches throughout the day.

2. The price is GOOOOD. Cupcakes $3-$3.50, Cookies $1, Brownies/bars $2.50, Pie/Cake slices $4-$6

3. The customer service is AMAZING! I can’t tell you how many past eating experiences have been ruined by an obnoxious or rude employee. All the staff I have met at both Magnolia Bakery locations are super nice and helpful. Seriously, how could u work at a bakery surrounded by sugar and NOT be happy???

4.Great ambiance. When you walk into Magnolia Bakery, it gives you the feel of a vintage chic bakery/kitchen. The Carrara marble countertops are beautiful and stylish. The warm seafoam color palette gives it such a cozy feel. There’s even an open area where you can watch cake and cupcakes being iced. Thank goodness for the small velvet rope to keep sugar fiends like myself from dipping my face finger in the icing.

To keep things exciting, Magnolia Bakery features a new flavor each month. When I went in August it was peach month. September is peanut butter month. I was eager to try all the peanut butter goodness.

PB&J Sandwich: Layers of peanut butter buttercream and grape jelly sandwiched between two slices of rich peanut butter loaf cake ($3.50 each).

PB&J Cupcake: Rich peanut butter cupcake topped with peanut butter buttercream and filled with a smidgen of grape jelly ($3.50 each).

Peanut Butter Chocolate Brownie: Filled with chocolate chunks and topped with a layer of melt-in-your-mouth semi-sweet chocolate ($2.50 each).

As if the peanut butter extravaganza wasn’t enough, I just HAD to try the strawberry icebox cake- Fresh strawberry puree whipped into fresh sweet cream layered between chocolate wafers. $4.50

Everything was DEE-LISH-US!!! If you don’t believe me, ask Bronson.

…and if all that isn’t enough to make you wanna check them out, Magnolia Bakery has been featured on Sex In The City, The Devil Wears Prada, Spin City, and Veronica Mars.

The currently have locations in NYC, LA, Chicago, and Dubai.

Missoni For Target

14 Sep

There has been a huge fusion in the fashion world.

The high end Italian design house, Missoni has collaborated with Target to develop a line of 400 items. The Missoni family viewed the deal as a way to bring one of Italy’s best-known luxury brand names to a wider audience.

Missoni knit wear typically retails for more than $1,000 in boutiques and luxury department stores.

At Target, most items were less than $40 and included knit dresses, cardigans, rain boots, shoes, bedding, lingerie, luggage, dinnerware, stationary, and iPod covers. Most items featured Missoni’s famous zig -zag print.

The success of the Missoni line has been unprecedented. Target did a huge campaign advertising in Vogue, Fashion Week, and Fashion Night Out. I don’t think anyone could anticipate how popular this was gonna be.

Here’s an example of the savings consumers are being offered by purchasing Missoni at Target.

Banded V-Neck Dress at Bergdorf Goodman’s and Neiman Marcus $1,490

Missoni for Target Sleeveless Sweater Dress- Multicolor Zigzag Print $54.99

Luxury designers doing more moderately priced lines for retailers is very popular. Missoni isn’t the 1st line.  Architect Michael Graves was one of the 1st at Target over 10 years ago. He put his signature flair on teapots and toasters.

Ana Sui, John Paul Gaultier, Rodarte, and Issac Mizrahi followed suit with their own Target lines.

Other retailers have jumped on board. Kohl’s Corp. partnered with designer Vera Wang, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. did a deal with Norma Kamali, and H&M has offered limited editions from Roberto Cavalli Jimmy Choo, and Karl Lagerfeld.

Soooo….being the B.O.B (Baller On a Budget) that I am, I had to see the Missoni line for myself.

I dropped Mo off at school and Bronson and I headed to our local Target. As I pulled into the parking lot, a sea of Range Rovers, Bentleys, and Mercedes Benz greeted me. A huge shift from the Toyotas and Kias I normally see in the parking garage.

As soon as I walked in, I saw a huge cluster of women, mostly clad in designer duds, full makeup, huge diamonds, and Chanel bags. I’m no fashion heavyweight, but I do have a great appreciation for nice things…ON SALE, of course. These were the women who prolly frequented Neimans and Saks and never looked at a pricetag. Or the women who were dressed up and pretending to fall into this category.

What were they doing on my turf??? Isn’t the purpose of the Missoni for Target line to appeal to a DIFFERENT audience??? But hey, times are hard and everyone is looking for a deal these days.

The scene felt worse than Black Friday. The racks had already been cleared by the money saving mavens. I arrived at 8:30 and many of the women had lined up since 7AM for the the 8 AM opening. The only remnants of the Missoni line was billboards and empty shelves.

Target employees gradually brought out more items and they were instantly mobbed by these “classy” women. There were 3 security guards on hand and 2 of the ladies were arrested on site for fighting over the Missoni items. ( I would love to see those Biatches clad in a L.A County orange jumpsuit…a far cry from Missoni). Many of the women complained of hair pulling, shoving, and scratching.

I witnessed store employees being berated and yelled at for not having enough inventory. I saw 2 security guards getting cursed out for being “in the way”. A lot of these women were out of control and downright obnoxious with their self entitled attitudes.

***NEWSLASH*** You are in Target. Simmer down with the snobbiness. Go buy a Coke and some candles on Aisle 12 and REALX!

I was sad I missed the great deals but happy to be part of the action. This was fashion history to me, but I refused to partake in treating store employees and other people as inferior to get a deal on a designer sweater.  I strolled by customers who proudly smirked as I admired their Missoni bargains in their buggy.

Then 3 things happened that re-assured me the nice guy doesn’t always finish last.

1. As Bronson and I were playing in the kid section (far away from the Missoni displays) a Target employee walks by with a box. He admires Bronson then informs me his cardboard box is filled with Missoni glasses that are about to go on the shelves in the war zone 1 floor below. He gives me 1st dips. SCORE!

2. As I’m looking for a backpack to Mo (far away from the Missoni displays) another store employess points out about 2o untouched Missoni carry on luggage bags just sitting untouched on the secluded aisle. I couldn’t believe my good fortune. I thanked the employee, grabbed Mo’s backpack as well as one of the Missoni carry ons. SCORE!

3. In need of a couple of tshirts, I wander into the women’s department. The Missoni mob is nowhere in sight bc they are all staked outside the warehouse and shipping doors impatiently waiting for more items. Just as I’m eyeing some $10 tees, a security guard I previously chatted up about all the craziness taps me on the shoulder and informs me a shipment of Missoni sweaters was just put on the floor from. I politely grab one in my size. SCORE!

Then I spot a mom like me, 2 kids in tow, sweatpants, dirty shirt, disheveled hair, no makeup, but a HUGE friendly smile. She’s the 1st Missoni hunting shopper I meet with kids present. I quickly direct her to the sweaters and luggage. She is so appreciative of the finds and goes on to tell me these are her 1st designer items and she never thought in a million years she’d be sporting a designer line she’d seen so many times on tv and the red carpet.

She and I walk past the Gucci clad angry mob and flash a huge smile to them as they side eye our Missoni bargains in our buggies.

I am thankful to Missoni and Target for giving me and this mom an opportunity to indulge our designer taste on a B.O.B budget.

My Son’s 2 Fave Things In NYC…And My LEAST Fave

13 Aug

The main focus of my NYC trip was to make sure my son had the time of his life.

He did.

Thanks to F.A.O Schwarz and Dylan’s Candy Bar.

If you take the kiddies to NY, these are definitely places you don’t wanna miss!

An inviting welcome to F.A.O from perky human toy soldiers

Our goofiest pose by the Lego Ms. Liberty

Off to Dylan’s Candy Bar

The giant chocolate fountain is ready to dunk strawberries, pretzels, pineapples, marshmellos, and Rice Krispie Treats

Gotta  a candy bar honoring the greatest female singer of all time

The celeb candy faves were cool

Candy is EVERYwhere…even in the stairs

Now for my least fave and prolly the least memorable for Mo too…TIMES SQUARE.

OMG…if you are my friend and told me to go here, I am seriously re-considering our friendship.

There is absolutely nothing to do there except wander aimlessly with stinky tourists.

The billboards and lights are cool…ok…saw it…now what? Yes, Times Square is lined with stores, but it’s the same boring stores found at my local mall. Oh gee…let’s see what’s in Walgreens…umm no…CHECK PLEASE!

So, to ensure this wasn’t a wasted trip, me and Mo busted out a photo shoot right in the middle of Times Square…then we ditched it for something more exciting…

Great Food (For Mommy/Kids) In NYC

12 Aug

Our NYC trip was really short.

I wanted to make sure Mo had a blast.

I was so focused on him having fun, I didn’t even do any shopping for MYSELF. *Gasp*

I didn’t step one single foot in any ladies stores…no clothes, purses, or shoes for mommy. :(

BUT…I did however indulge in my other fave past time: EATING!!!!

I love food. It’s one of my fave things about traveling…checking out all the local spots for yumminess.

New York was in no shortage. Here are some of my faves:

RED ROOSTER

*Located in the heart of historic Harlem, they serve upscale comfort food. I had the blackened catfish and black eyed peas. It was pretty good. The cornbread is great and the honey butter, I could drink…loved it…Chef/Owner Marcus Samuelsson was the winner of 2010 Top Chef Masters Season 2 and also served as the guest chef for the first State Dinner of the Obama administration. I went on a Friday night and they had a dj inside and a nice crowd. I enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Sylvia’s is just a couple doors down.

Patsy’s Pizzeria

*I figured I couldn’t go to NY and NOT eat pizza. Patsy’s was great. I ate at the one right across the street from Dylan’s Candy Bar. It had a nice atmosphere and the food was amazing!!! I’m basic Betty when it comes to pizza…just cheese…I loved it. I went there for pizza, but the real winner was the Fried Zucchini and Eggplant w/garlic yogurt dipping sauceOUT OF THIS WORLD AMAZING. I’m from the South so I love my fried food, but this one was healthy right…veggies, yogurt, and garlic?? The breading was light, well seasoned, and fried just right. This is a must have!!!

Magnolia Bakery

*Soooo many people raved about this place, I couldn’t wait to try it. I went to the one at Rockefeller Center. It was love at 1st bite!!! I had an orange cupcake with chocolate frosting, Blueberry jamboree, and peach jamboree. The jamborees were heavenly…they have a pecan shortbread crust layered with whipped cream cream cheese filling and fresh fruit topping. The only thing that was as good as the taste was the price…$3.50!!!! They also have banana pudding, cakes, cookies, pies, bars…Their staff is super friendly and helpful…I was all around impressed by this place.

The only annoying thing was the ordering…you order desserts in stations per category (ex. one line for cupcakes, one for cookies, one for pies, etc…and one for checkout). But it’s all worth it. Some of the best baked goods I’ve had since I lived in GA. Their tshirts are really cute too. And I just found out there is a Magnolia Bakery in LA…all my LA peeps need to check it out!!! They will also be shipping worldwide soon so check their website.

Food Trucks/Street Vendors

*I am such a food truck flunkee…so I was right at home eating on the streets of NYC. I instantly fell in love with the fresh fruit juice/smoothies. They use freshly cut fruits and veggies and make your drink right in front of you. They are pretty cheap too, about $3-$5. I loved the Nathan’s hot dogs…crisp and yummy…and also all the hot nuts (cashews, almonds, peanuts) coated with a sweet topping made fresh. Also very cheap $2.50-$4 for a lil baggie full.

Dylan’s Candy Bar, Candy Cafe

*Lots of kiddie and adult edible treats: dessert pizzas, tea, coffee, frozen hot cholcolate, Crumbs cupcakes, and sundaes like the infamous I BET YOU CAN’T SUNDAE $25
(10 scoops of ice cream (your choice), 10 toppings (your choice), hot fudge, whipped cream, cherry). Oh, and an adult bar with adult beverages and top shelf liquor. The 3rd floor cafe is decorated with enough candy memorabilia and bright colors to make you vomit, but it’s festive and the kids love it!
