I don’t think I’ve ever gotten teary eyed watching a commercial.
Oh wait, there’s that David Beckham one in his H&M undies, but those were tears of joy.
After seeing a Cheerios commercial featuring a biracial couple and their mixed daughter, I must say it really moved me.
Bear with me, I’m
menstruating emo right now.
Growing up multiracial and being a mother of multiethnic children, I applaud Cheerios for showing MY reality. MY life.
THIS is a world I like to live in. One that teaches acceptance and reflects an America that isn’t just black and white.
I was disappointed to hear that there was a lot of negative backlash to the commercial. YouTube comments had to be closed (but come on, idiots post dumb comments on EVERYthing on YouTube). However, there were also negative remarks on the Cheerios Facebook page.
*ATTENTION* people stuck in the 60s, America is changing. Love is color blind. If you don’t like it, head over the Hunger Games arena and work it out there!
“At Cheerios, we know there are many kinds of families and we celebrate them all.”
Hats off to Cheerios for raising awareness of a new America.
Very proud that they are including a biracial family in their advertising. The more positive images our children see of varying family units, the more accepting and understanding they can grow up.
“Children are not born prejudiced. Teach them tolerance, love, and acceptance in your words and actions.”-Nora Moore
**Update**02/01/13 Eight months after I saw the “controversial” Cheerios commercial the cereal giant is releasing a new ad featuring the same biracial family…and guess what? The family is growing!!! I hope this means more commercials featuring this family. The amazing thing is when I watched the 2nd ad I didn’t see color. I saw Cheerios. And a beautiful family. I’d say that’s progress. I hope the rest of America sees it that way too. Keep breaking barriers Cheerios. My family supports you because you support us. Thank you.
