My sweet B caught a 24 hour stomach bug. It all started with a shart, tummy ache, fatigue, and vomiting. It ran it’s course in a matter of 6 hours and he slept a lot. It should come as no surprise that 2 days later I caught it, but it presented itself in a far worse manner. I’m ok with that. Better me than him.
If you’ve ever had what is referred to as “stomach flu” you know where I’m coming from. The proper name is Gastroenteritis. The signs and symptoms are vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramping. There is no cure. That’s right, in the day of electric cars, man on the moon, and touch screen tablets no one has found a cure for the dreaded stomach flu.
I’ve pushed out a baby and had a C-Section. I’m pretty sure the residual effects of the stomach flu are worse. I’ve never vomited before and after 8 minutes straight it scared the crap out of me. Literally. So not fun. I woke up feeling fine just a mild case of the Drizzling Jennies. I got the boys to school then returned home to camp out by the throne. About 2 hours later it crept up on me and knocked me out like a Tyson jab. The abdominal cramping and fatigue were the worst. It was nearly impossible to move out of bed and I had to literally crawl to the kitchen to get some water to avoid dehydration.
So, enough moaning and groaning….again, there is no cure so you pretty much have to let it run it’s course. The biggest mistake I made was trying to take medicine to alleviate the symptoms during the height of the virus. Your stomach literally cannot hold anything down, not even a sip of water. BEWARE!
I advise parents to have some key remedies on hand in case you or your child is ever cursed with this devil known as stomach flu. The last thing you want is to be running to the store during this ordeal. Luckily my good friend and neighbor hooked me up.
*Electrolyte drink for dehydration (clear Gatorade,Pedialyte, Knudson’s Recharge)
*high PH water
*ginger chews, ginger tea, or Ginger Ale
*peppermint tea/candy helps to soothe your digestive tract
*anti nausea meds
*Immodium or Pepto
Some people experience a mild fever, luckily I didn’t. During the time of letting the stomach bug run it’s course I used all of the above to help in some form once the vomiting and diarrhea slowed down. Do not force anything in the early stages, it will make it worse. Of course be sure to consult your physician. I am not advising as a doctor, just a mom and what worked for me. If my symptoms hadn’t subsided I was prepared to hit the hospital for an IV.
A couple more tips:
*Make sure to take SMALL sips of fluids as if drinking from a thin straw.
*If you can’t swallow pills whole, crush them and mix with applesauce.
*Let someone know what you’re going through in case you need medical attention.
*Avoid dairy and caffeine
*Lay down, fetal position helps during abdominal spasms.
*Once you’re feeling better and can eat avoid solid foods. Start with the BRAT diet- Bananas, Rice, Apples, Toast.
I hope you or your loved one never experiences this but if it happens, just know once you go through the worst it will start to get better. Hang in there and don’t panic. It will feel like the world is ending, but it will pass. -XO
