Chicago mom, Kendra Thornton reached out to me and thought it would be cool if we shared some fun things to do in our cities. As the former Orbitz Director of Communications Kendra has great travel experience. As a mom of 3, she knows how to keep kids entertained. Here are Kendra’s picks of Chicago:
My List of Awesome Chicago Travel Activities
Chicago has an incredible number of options for travelers. No matter how long you stay in the Windy City, you won’t run out of amazing shops, restaurants and attractions to visit. As a local resident, I can personally recommend some of the best things to try while you’re here.
See a World-Class Exhibit of Marine Wildlife
Shedd Aquarium is one of the greatest places to encounter a huge array of aquatic creatures anywhere in the world. Thanks to the aquarium’s convenient location on the shore of Lake Michigan, travelers don’t need to worry about finding it. The aquarium houses more than 32,500 animals spanning approximately 1,500 unique species. The beluga whale exhibit, which is especially popular with visitors, gives a close encounter one of these magnificent creatures. With so many attractions, one could easily spend an entire day here.
Savor the Skyline
Chicago’s skyline is crowned by the Sears tower, but numerous other architectural achievements also help make downtown beautiful. At night, the city lights up in a way best appreciated from nearby. In fact, you can enhance your trip by booking your stay at a hotel in the downtown area or close enough to give you a clear view at night. These days, you don’t have to find the right hotel slowly and painfully. It’s easy to use Gogobot to find the best hotels, in terms of price and location, for your visit to Chicago.
Seize Sales on Southport
The Magnificent Mile is an amazing place for mainstream fashion shopping, but travelers who want to buy the latest alternative styles should visit nearby Southport Avenue. Located in Lakeview, Southport is just a short walk from Wrigley Field. Southport has the hottest new styles, but its atmosphere is surprisingly relaxed. Consumers who want to walk away with local fashions should visit Cerato Boutique, which features clothing designed in Chicago. Other boutiques, such as Tula and Krista K, also help make a shopping trip to this district unforgettable. Be sure to bring plenty of funds because you won’t want to leave here empty-handed.
Let Uncle Lou Serve You
A diner can be a refreshing restaurant experience from time to time, and nobody does this better than Lou Mitchell’s. This diner has been a Chicago legend for many years, and it has continued to enjoy massive popularity with locals and travelers alike. The low prices are among the best things about this place. Of course, it’s also easy to love the free Milk Duds that the staff passes out to women and children. This is done to honor the man who created Milk Duds, who was a regular customer here and a friend of Lou Mitchell. The combination of affordability and a unique experience make this meal essential for any trip to Chicago.
Your trip to Chicago will be a vacation to remember if you check out the activities I’ve listed here. Unfortunately, there’s no way you can experience everything Chicago offers in just one trip. In the end, however, you just might find that you either want to visit again or even become a permanent Chicago resident.
Things To Do In Los Angeles With The Kids
Los Angeles isn’t just the entertainment capital and home of the “beautiful people”. There are some really cool activities to enjoy with the kids. Of course there are the popular tourist spots: DisneyLand, LegoLand, Hollywood Boulevard, and Universal Studios. However, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy the city. Ball out on a budget with the little ones here:
Hit The Beach
Point Dume State Beach is part of Zuma County Beaches. It’s one of my fave spots to hit on a warm day. It’s not flooded with many tourists. It’s a clean beach with plenty of parking. Lifeguards are on duty during the busy season. Pack a picnic, sunscreen, and beach ball. It’s easy to spend a day soaking up the California coastline surrounded by the cliffs, rocks, and picturesque beach homes.
A Fun Day Of Art
Los Angeles County Museum Of Art (LACMA) is a great place to introduce kids to the arts. They offer FREE membership to kids age 17 and under which includes an adult admission as well. There are many indoor and outdoor exhibits that will excite kids. The infamous LaBrea tarpits are adjacent to the museum grounds. The Boone Children’s Gallery holds special workshops as well as open art painting and drawing for the little ones.
Sports, Flowers, And History
Exposition Park has something for everyone. Located on the USC campus it’s really cool for sports fans to check out Memorial Coliseum. Kids of all ages are captivated with the Space Shuttle Endeavor at the California Science Museum. They’ll have loads of fun at the butterfly and spider pavilions at The Natural History Museum. The African American Museum offers numerous exhibitions and art. A seven acre Rose Garden will tickle your senses with over 16,000 roses.
Shop, Dine, Play
The Grove LA has numerous options for shopping and dining. Movie theater, Farmer’s Market, CBS Studios, a trolley, and water show offer something for everyone. The beautiful well manicured grounds and modern California architecture are an Instagrammers delight. Unwind with the fam and take in the laid back Cali lifestyle.
If you’re planning a trip to the Windy City or City of Angels we hope you get a chance to enjoy some of these fun places. For more great travel ideas follow Kendra on Twitter.
