There is a lot of buzz about LSU Defensive Tackle, Michael Brockers.
The redshirt sophomore is projected to go 1st Round in the NFL draft.
In addition to excelling on the field, Michael posted a near-perfect score on the psychological testing that some teams give draft prospects.
The 21 year old 6-foot-5, 322-pound Houston native credits his mom, Tiffany Brockers for much of his work ethic and success.
Tiff worked hard as a single mom to 5 children: Michael, Ashton, Nicholas, Harrison and Jessica.
Raising her kids in a tough Houston neighborhood, she was determined to keep them safe and out of trouble.
She made sure Michael not only passed his classes but understood that Cs weren’t acceptable in any classes except for math. When she felt Michael needed male nurturing, Tiffany approached his football coaches for help
She made sure Michael helped babysit his siblings and also knew how to cook, clean, and wash clothes by age 10.
Michael had part time after school jobs at a car detailing shop and Houston restaurant. The money he earned was used to purchase his own school supplies, uniforms and a bus pass to get around town until getting a driver’s license at age 18.
It’s hard to believe Michael wasn’t even involved in organized sports until the 9th grade.
Michael wasn’t very enthused about all his chores and responsibilities, but as he got older stated, “I used to get mad and didn’t understand why she was doing it,” Michael said. “When I got to college and started going through this (pre-draft) experience, I began to think, ‘This is why.’ I have no background trouble and my rap sheet is empty and clean. I thank her for that.”
Michael vows to go back and finish his education. He explained his NFL and education plans to his mom and she said, ”Oh yeah, you’re going back to school.’”
Hearing that reassures me how important it is to teach my boys to be independent, responsible, and discipline. These valuable traits carry over into so many other facets of life.
