Men’s Health Magazine recently highlighted a great book, “Eat This, Not That! For Kids!” written by DAVID ZINCZENKO, editor-in-chief of Men’s Health magazine, and MATT GOULDING, food and nutrition editor of Men’s Health. There are so many great features in this book, but the best is the review of kid’s menus offered at 43 major chain restaurants. Although this book focuses on kids, let’s face it, many of us have adopted chicken nuggets, fries, pizza, and smoothies into our daily diet. So, the book basically tells you what menu items to avoid and what’s nutritionally sound at various fast food joints. Ideally, I would love to prepare 3 fresh meals daily using only the finest ingredients from my invisible organic garden but that just ain’t happenin. I’ll bet even June Cleaver dipped out to Popeye’s once a week. She probably just served the fried chicken to Wally and The Beav on a bone china plate a top a bed of spring lettuce garnished with thyme and fresh basil. So, as bad as it makes us feel, sometimes we just have to make the fast food stop. So now, at least you know what items to avoid (well, we already know what to avoid, but how easy is it to resist those McDonald french fries). Maybe seeing it in black and white will make it easier. And I am happy to note that my favorite fast food place, Chick-fil-A earned the award for America’s Healthiest Chain Restaurant for Kids (that Poynesian sauce probably could make liver delectable). The book retails for $19.99 but I got it on sale at Amazon for $13.57 (but then I ended up buying 2 more books just so I could get free shipping).
